ACU improves one spot to finish 4th at Pinehurst

PINEHURST, N.C. – The ACU golf team fired a final-round 305 Sunday to move up one spot and finish fourth at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate golf tournament.
The Wildcats finished the three-round tournament at plus-78 930 after shooting rounds of 305-320-305 at the par-71, 6,980-yard Pinehurst No. 8. Belmont held the lead from the outset and won by 18 shots over runner-up Marshall.
Belmont shot rounds of 297, 301 and a final-round 302 on Sunday to finish at 48-over-par 900, 18 shots ahead of the Thundering Herd, which shot 918 (316-299-303). William & Mary was third at 920 (313-303-304), followed by ACU in fourth.
"Sunday was a solid round today by our guys," ACU head coach Tom Shaw said. "We were able to move up one place and finish the week off right with one of the low scores of the day."
The Wildcats' round of 305 was the fourth-lowest of the day and tied for the seventh-lowest of the tournament as the conditions cleared and were favorable for scoring in the final round.
ACU senior Corbin Renner led the Wildcats' effort with a final-round 74 to finish at 9-over-par 222 (75-73-74), which was good enough for third place in the individual standings. Dillon Vaughn finished tied for 11th at 17-over-par 230 (75-81-74), while Brandon Wilkins finished tied for 27th at 238 (75-84-79). Robert Johnson finished tied for 41st at 243 (80-82-81), and Kaden Walters finished tied for 46th at 247 (85-84-78).
"It was great to see Corbin play as steady as he played," Shaw said. "He had a chance to tie for lead, but just couldn't get the putter hot at the right times. Dillon played well (Sunday) after recovering from a sickness on Saturday, which made it difficult to play."
The Wildcats will be off for a couple of weeks before playing in the Arkansas-Little Rock First Tee Classic at the Chenal Country Club in Little Rock, Ark., March 30-31.
