Men's Tennis splits pair of one-point decisions during home opener

ABILENE - Abilene Christian men's tennis twice was pushed to its limits Saturday as the Wildcats followed a 4-3 win over Tyler Junior College with a 4-3 defeat against Trinity University, in which four singles matches went to a third set and all three doubles contests were decided by two points or less.

The twinbill split puts the Wildcats' season record at 2-5, while Trinity improved to 2-1 and the Apaches fell to 0-1.

ACU lost the doubles point in each dual but rallied all the way back from a 3-0 deficit against Tyler by receiving four consecutive victories from its No. 3 to 6 singles players. Freshmen Henry Adams and Paul Domanski, along with junior Marco Bensley won their matches in straight sets and then sophomore Nico Agritelley held off Ciro Lampasas at No. 3, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6.

Agritelley, Domanski and Bensley were all victorious a second time in singles against Trinity at the No. 4 to 6 positions, but Adams couldn't hold on at No. 3 against Aaron Skinner, falling 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. And at No. 2, Jordan Mayer came back from a set down to top ACU junior Jason Proctor, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4.

Domanski and Agritelley each won their matches in three sets vs. Trinity, while Bensley defeated Clayton Niess, 7-6, 6-3.

Agritelley and Bensley lead the Wildcats this spring with matching 4-3 singles' records and Domanski isn't far behind at 3-4.

The Wildcats return to action Friday at home for their Southland Conference opener vs. New Orleans at 11:44 a.m., immediately following praise chapel.
