DALLAS, Texas - Abilene Christian men's tennis displayed marked improvement between last year's meeting with SMU and this year's dual, but sadly their efforts were not reflected in the final score as the Wildcats lost once again to the Mustangs, 7-0.
ACU won just a single set here a year ago, but today the Wildcats captured a 6-4 decision at No. 1 singles as senior
Guilherme Gesser and
Nico Agritelley outlasted Arturs Kazijevs and Markus Kerner. The Wildcats then came very close to winning the doubles point, but Samm Butler and Tony Russell were able to pull out a 7-6 (5) victory at No. 3 over
Marco Bensley and
Henry Adams.
The Wildcats went on to lose their six singles matches, but both Agritelley and Bensley showed some resiliency in pushing theirs to a third set tiebreak. Unfortunately, Agritelley would fall to Butler at No. 3, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7, while Bensley lost his match at No. 6 to Charles Nettlefold, 6-3, 2-6, 10-4.
ACU remains on the road this week with matches at Murray State, Lipscomb, Bethel and Austin Peay.
The Wildcats first home event is the Feb. 7 ACU Indoor Invitational featuring Prairie View A&M, Trinity and Tyler.
