Summer Camp Report: Day One

ABILENE – The ACU Wildcats got their first workout of the summer session out of the way Sunday afternoon with 95 players going through practice in helmets and shorts at the Wally Bullington Practice Facility.
As would be expected with players not in full pads, Sunday's practice was about setting a tempo and teaching.
"It's hard to call it real football when you're out there with no pads," ACU head coach Ken Collums said. "But just since Sunday we've been able to do a lot of classroom work and we'll continue to do that. We'll be in shoulder pads and helmets Monday afternoon, so we'll be able to lean on each other a little more and start to get an idea of where we are as a team."
Sophomore quarterback Parker McKenzie got most of the reps with the first team, but all six quarterbacks – McKenzie, redshirt freshmen Kade Munden and Will Weathers, freshman transfer Mike Richardson and true freshmen Dallas Sealey and Cody Ennis – also got work on Sunday afternoon.
Barring injury, former Abilene High running back Herschel Sims – who reported at a trim 211 pounds – will be the starter on Wednesday, Aug. 27, when the Wildcats open their season at Georgia State in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Sims will be backed up by De'Andre Brown, Adrian Duncan and Randy Gober, who returned Sunday after missing the entire 2013 season and spring workouts after tearing his Achilles' tendon early in summer workouts last year as a true freshman.
OTHER NOTES
Sunday's practice was the first for four new members of the ACU staff: offensive line coach Scott Carey, defensive line coach Cody Moore, graduate assistant coach John David Baker and volunteer coach Trace Michaels. … Michaels is a former Abilene radio personality who is the pulpit minister at South Pointe Church in Abilene and a former volunteer coach for Abilene and San Angelo arena league teams. … Wildcat upperclassmen wasted no time in showing some leadership with several older players making sure younger players knew their assignments, where to line up, where to go, etc. … Senior defensive end Nick Richardson — 11 sacks away from becoming the program's all-time sacks leader — was one of the most vocal, standing behind the rest of the team as Collums broke the team down at the end of practice, verbally reminding players to keep their heads up and eyes forward while the Wildcats' third-year head coach spoke to the team.
