ABILENE -- More than 30 local women took part in almost three hours of classroom and on-field instruction Thursday night as ACU head football coach Ken Collums and his staff hosted the program's first Football 101 Camp for Moms on the ACU campus.
The women went through classroom instruction for more than two hours, peppering the coaching staff with questions and listening intently as the coaches diagrammed plays and went through basic football lingo with the moms, most of whom had sons either on local high school football teams or at ACU.
"We had a great time, and we only want to grow this thing," Collums said. "I was more nervous about talking to this group of ladies than talking to our guys. They gave me their undivided attention and we had a great time going through everything."
Once on the field, defensive coordinator Darian Dulin and linebackers coach Mark Ribaudo put the ladies through tackling drills, while new defensive line coach Cody Moore put another group through defensive line drills designed to quicken the hands. On the other end of the field, new offensive line coach Scott Corey put another group through blocking drills.
"I've been to a few other "Football 101" programs for moms at another university, but having a player here now really made a difference," said Jennifer Douglass, the mother of incoming ACU freshman linebacker Dylan Douglass. "I wanted to see what the coaches and the program here are all about."
