AUSTIN - Abilene Christian's men's tennis team dealt their old NCAA Division II rivals from St. Edward's a 6-1 loss on its way out of the Texas state capital Wednesday night at the Strohmeyer Varsity Tennis Courts.
The victory was ACU's 13th of the season, but probably did little to remove the taste of defeat from today's earlier loss against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which cost the Wildcats a shot at the Southland Conference's regular-season title. ACU lost 4-1 to the Islanders as it followed a doubles-point victory with four-consecutive singles defeats.
As for St. Edward's, the Hilltoppers (12-7) had their six-match winning streak snapped with two losses coming on the doubles courts plus an additional five in singles.
Three of those defeats were in straight sets at the No. 1, 5 and 6 positions, while sophomore
Nicklas Wingord and freshman
Nico Agritelley each came back from a set down to win in three. Agritelley also won in doubles today alongside sophomore
Jason Proctor and hasn't lost in either singles or doubles since a March 30 dual at No. 6 Baylor.
Agritelley, who should be considered a strong candidate for Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, is now 15-7 in singles and 15-5 in doubles.
For
Borja Cortés and
Marco Bensley, they each won their 13th singles matches of the season, while Proctor moved above .500 at 11-10 with his win at No. 4.
Bensley's partnership with Wingord at No. 3 doubles also has proven to be effective as this tandem is 3-0 since hooking up for the first time earlier this week against Lamar. They beat Corpus Christi's Javier Pujol and Ricardo Mayagoitia this morning, 8-6, and St. Edward's Alexandre Bueno and Ivan Vaz in the afternoon, 8-5.
The Wildcats play their final home match Friday at 12:30 p.m. vs. Oral Roberts at the Eager Tennis Pavilion.
