Men's Tennis keeps conference unbeaten streak alive with 5-2 win at Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas - Abilene Christian's men's tennis team ran its winning streak to three and remained undefeated against the Southland Conference Sunday following its 5-2 win over Lamar on the outdoor courts of the Thompson Family Tennis Center.

The Wildcats are now 12-9 and 4-0 vs. the league as they prepare for a neutral-site match Wednesday in Austin against conference co-leaders Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (15-9, 4-0 Southland). ACU and the Islanders were to have met in early March during the Wildcats' Spring Break week, but the originally scheduled date was postponed due to rain.

With their fourth-straight loss, the Cardinals fell to .500 at 12-12 and 1-4 against the Southland Conference.

"We played awesome today to beat a good team, and I have to give a lot of credit to my assistants John Walker and Juan Nunez for helping us win," said head coach Hutton Jones as he was driving from Beaumont to an indoor court in Houston to complete the women's dual vs. Lamar. "And I'm not sure if you'd call our win an upset, but this Lamar team beat a UTSA team (4-2), which beat Rice (4-3) earlier this month."

ACU began the dual earning its fourth-consecutive doubles point as the No. 3 team of Marco Bensley and Nicklas Wingord doubled up Trey Crysel and Carl-Philip Lindqvis, 8-4, followed by No. 1s Borja Cortés and Guilherme Gesser edging Nikita Lis and Mikko Rajamaki, 8-6.

The match at No. 2 doubles featuring Nico Agritelley and Jason Proctor vs. Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Juuso Laitinen was left unfinished with the score tied at 7-7.

In singles, the Wildcats scored straight set-wins at No. 1, 3, and 6 in addition to freshman Nico Agritelley's three-set marathon triumph over Rajamaki, 6-4, 1-6, 13-11.

Agritelley's win was his fifth straight as he improved to 14-7 overall this spring.

Bensley at No. 6 received little resistance from Crysel, winning 6-3, 6-1, while Gesser at No. 3 picked up his third-straight win, defeating Lindqvis, 6-2, 6-3.

Cortés beat Lis at No. 1, 6-3, 6-4 to lift his season record to 12-8.
