Wildcats follow shutout win with shutout loss on Baylor's courts

WACO, Texas - Abilene Christian's men's tennis team had its three-match winning streak snapped Sunday by sixth-ranked Baylor as the Bears shut the Wildcats out 7-0 at the Hurd Tennis Center.

Earlier in the day, however, it was ACU on the positive end of a shutout decision, blanking the Tigers of Temple College, 7-0. Today's doubleheader split put the Wildcats' season record at 8-8 as they will next compete Thursday in Houston against Prairie View A&M and Rice.

In their win over Temple, which is among the top-ranked junior college programs in the nation, the Wildcats swept doubles before winning all six of their singles matches in straight sets. Junior Guilherme Gesser and sophomore Marco Bensley each pitched a shutout of their respective opponents at the No. 3 and 6 positions, while at No. 1, Borja Cortés defeated Dalton Woodfin, 6-1, 6-1.

ACU's dual against the Bears carried a lopsided final score, but the No. 4, 5 and 6 singles matches all were quite close. Gesser sent his match at No. 4 against Vince Schneider to a third set with a 6-3 win in the second, but ultimately lost, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2; and at No. 6, Bensley lost a third-set super tiebreaker to Robbie Korth, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-5.

Freshman Nico Agritelley came close to sending his match at No. 5 vs. Robert Verzaal to a third set before bowing in the second-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 7-6 (2).

The top half of ACU's order all lost in straight sets to Baylor, which today played No. 15 Patrick Pradella against Cortés at No. 1, and seventh-ranked Julian Lenz against Wildcat sophomore Nicklas Wingord.
