Wildcats suffer sweep at hands of Sam Houston, Rhode Island in Lubbock

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
LUBBOCK – The ACU Wildcats committed seven errors in two games Saturday as they lost to both Sam Houston State and Rhode Island in the Texas Tech Invitational softball tournament at Rocky Johnson Field.

The Wildcats (4-12) lost to Sam Houston State, 8-6 in nine innings, Saturday morning and then gave up four runs in the bottom of the sixth Saturday afternoon to drop a 5-3 decision to a Rhode Island team that ACU freshman pitcher Hannah Null threw a no-hitter against Friday night.

ACU was slated to face Texas Tech Sunday in its final game of the weekend, but that game was cancelled due to projected cold weather throughout northern Texas. The Wildcats and Lady Raiders, however, are still scheduled to play on Friday night.

Here's a recap of each of ACU's games Saturday:

Sam Houston State 8, ACU 6 (9 innings): ACU lost to its new Southland Conference foe for the third time in the non-conference portion of the schedule, including for the second time in the last two games.

The Bearkats scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to break a 5-5 tie, taking the lead on an RBI single by Hillary Adams and then extending the lead, thanks to a two-run home run Cecilia Castillo.

Trailing 8-5 going to the bottom of the ninth, the Wildcats got a run on a sacrifice fly by Lyndi Smith, scoring Ashley Nolan to make it 8-6. But with the tying run at the plate, Courtney Flanary grounded out to end the game.

Null (3-5) was tagged with the loss, depute going the distance and allowing just four earned runs.

Rhode Island 5, ACU 3: The Rams took advantage of a pair of Wildcat errors to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally for a 5-3 win over the team that ho-hit them less than 18 hours earlier.

ACU led the game 3-1 behind a strong pitching performance from Peyton Mosley, but a throwing error by Flanary at third base and a fielding error by Buckley in centerfield helped open the floodgates for the Rams. Marylynn Muldowney had the big hit with a two-run single to break a 3-3 tie and give her team a 5-3 lead.

The Wildcats broke open a scoreless game in the fifth inning with three runs on four hits. Buckley drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Kaylee Crozier scored on a  wild pitch and Kyla Simmons doubled in a run to give her team a 3-0 lead. Rhode Island scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 3-1, setting up the sixth-inning comeback.

Mosley took the loss to drop to 0-4, but scattered eight hits over six innings while striking out four Rams and walking just two.
