DENTON, Texas - Abilene Christian's softball team lost two games to a pair of Southland Conference foes Saturday during the third day of competition at the Texas Shootout, hosted by North Texas at Lovelace Field.
The Wildcats were defeated early this morning by Sam Houston State, 6-1, and dropped an 8-3 decision to Stephen F. Austin in the afternoon. ACU (2-9) will play one more tournament game Sunday, but its opponent and game time won't be know until all of today's games are completed.
Following this weekend's games, the Wildcats return home to Poly Wells Field Tuesday for a doubleheader vs. crosstown rival Hardin-Simmons. Game times are 3 and 5 p.m.
Game One Recap - Sam Houston State 6, Abilene Christian 1
Sophomore
Demi McNulty went 3-for-3 with a double and run scored but her performance alone could not overcome Sam Houston State's home run-barrage as the Bearkats' left North Texas' Lovelace Field as 6-1 victors Saturday morning.
Bearkat center fielder Tayler Gray hit the first of three Sam Houston home runs with a solo shot in the first inning off ACU freshman
Hannah Null (1-4). Hillary Adams then led off the third with a blast to right field and Tiffany Castillo followed with a two-run shot to center that made it a 4-0 game.
ACU got one back in the fifth after
Anna Jones doubled home McNulty with one out, but Jones was left stranded at third base – and
Madison Buckley at first - after Bearkat starter Meme Quinn (1-1) struck out catcher
Lyndi Smith.
ACU went in order in the sixth and left one runner stranded on first base in the seventh as Quinn finished her 80-pitch, complete-game victory with three strikeouts.
After Null was taken out following Castillo's home run, senior
Peyton Mosley tossed a scoreless fourth and fifth innings before being touched for two runs in the sixth. Junior
Emily Seidel also pitched part of the sixth and allowed an inherited runner to score before getting Adams to pop up on the infield and pinch hitter Dani Allen on a fly ball to left.
Game Two Recap - Stephen F. Austin 8, Abilene Christian 3
The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead into the fifth only to see it quickly disappear as the Ladyjacks sent nine batters to the plate during a six-run outburst. The first four runs came across on back-to-back singles up the middle, and then pitcher/cleanup hitter Brittany Lewis (2-3) crushed a two-run shot off starter
Emily Seidel (1-3).
Hannah Null came in from the Wildcat bullpen to record the final two outs. She also pitched a scoreless sixth but surrendered a solo blast in the seventh to Elizabeth Arana.
Null collected 4 Ks in 2.2 innings of work.
Lewis gave her team an 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out single to left, but the Wildcats countered with an unearned run in their half of the frame and took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on
Madison Buckley's RBI double that plated
Tori Valdivia.
Valdivia also scored the Wildcats' third run in the sixth on a
Paige Stevens' single to right-center field.
ACU finished the game with more hits than SFA, 10-9, but left 10 runners on base.
