Men's tennis makes home debut, women return to a frigid Midwest

ABILENE - Abilene Christian's men's and women's tennis teams are both in competition this weekend with several dual matches on their respective schedules.

The men will play host to a two-day, five-team invitational at ACU's Teague Events Center Friday and Saturday that will feature squads from regional rivals Tyler, Trinity, Texas-Permian Basin and McMurry.

Matches begin Friday at 8 a.m. and conclude Saturday night with the Wildcats taking on the War Hawks at 6 p.m.  ACU's noon match vs. Permian Basin is currently scheduled to be played on the outdoor courts of the Eager Tennis Pavilion as temperatures are expected to reach the low 60's with winds coming out of the northwest at 10 miles per hour.

ACU's women's team, meanwhile, will again travel to the midwest for the second time in three weeks for its first duals of the season at Wright State (Horizon), Cincinnati (American) and Xavier (Big East).

Wright State enters the weekend at 1-2 with a victory vs. IUPUI sandwiched in between losses to No. 35 Akron and SIU-Edwardsville, while Xavier is 0-2 with losses to Indiana and Miami University.

Cincinnati edged Toledo, 4-3, in their season opener on Jan. 17, but were then shutout in consecutive duals by Kentucky and Indiana.

The Wildcat women began their spring two weeks ago at an invitational hosted by Indiana, where the team faced off against the nationally ranked Hoosiers in addition to teams from Oregon, Harvard and Marquette.

ACU's seven singles players combined for a 6-8 record with sophomore Nada Marjanovic recording the team's lone 2-0 record as she defeated opposition from Indiana and Harvard. In doubles, she went 1-3 with senior Emily Conrad, while the Hermsdorf sisters and the duo of Brittney Reed and Erin Walker each went 2-2.

The Hermsdorfs beat two tandems from Harvard. Walker and Reed lost twice to Oregon, but beat teams from Marquette and IU.

ACU's men's team split its four-dual weekend in Colorado Springs a week ago as the Wildcats followed a 6-1 win vs. Metro State with a 6-1 loss at Air Force on Friday, and then played consecutive 4-3 decisions Saturday vs. Grand Canyon and Northern Colorado.

Junior Borja Cortes had the best weekend of all the Wildcats, going 4-0 at the No. 1 singles position and 2-2 at No. 1 doubles. One of his singles' victories was a three-set comeback 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph against Air Force's Andy Jackson.

Sophomore Jason Proctor and freshman Nico Agritelley also had an excellent weekend as each went 3-1 in singles. Agritelley also went 3-1 in doubles with Proctor and Guilherme Gesser, while Proctor went 2-2.
