COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Junior Borja Cortés won both his matches at No. 1 singles and scored an important victory at No. 1 doubles vs. Northern Colorado during Saturday's indoor doubleheader hosted by the Air Force Academy.
Cortés' two singles victories keep him undefeated on the season at 4-0. This morning he beat Grand Canyon's Nicolas Moulin, 6-3, 6-5 (3) and later he upended Ben Gendron of UNC, 6-1, 6-3. The Barcelona native and junior
Guilherme Gesser also beat Gendron and partner Austin Mayo at the top doubles position, 6-3.
The win by Cortés and Gesser helped the Wildcats secure the doubles point over Northern Colorado as it was followed by freshman
Nico Agritelley and sophomore
Jason Proctor capturing a 6-4 decision over Mitchel Knight and Jacob Sheldon.
Proctor and Agritelley then won their respective singles matches over the Bears at the No. 3 and 4 positions. Proctor defeated Austin Mayo, 6-1, 6-2, to finish his weekend at 3-1, while Agritelley fought past Michael Moya, 6-5, 6-1. Agritelley also recorded three weekend singles victories at the Air Force Academy.
The same Wildcat trio - Cortés, Proctor and Agritelley - won at No. 1, No. 4 and 5 in the 4-3 loss to Grand Canyon. ACU, however, dropped the doubles point in its early match with defeats at the No. 1 and 3 positions. The Wildcats also lost a point at No. 2 when sophomore
Nicklas Wingord was forced to retire in the second set.
ACU's men's team returns to action next Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 1-2, for an indoor invitational hosted at the Teague Events Center.
