Fifth-ranked women’s tennis outlasts No. 9 West Florida, but men fall to the No. 3 Argos

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Even without the services of top-ranked player Julia Mongin, Abilene Christian's fifth-ranked women's tennis team Saturday managed to pull off a minor upset as they edged ninth-ranked West Florida, 5-4, during the second day of a weekend road trip to the gulf coast.

Mongin was slowed by an injury shortly after ACU's win over Cameron last week, but head coach Hutton Jones expects she'll be rested and ready in time for the Lone Star Conference Championships and NCAA regionals.

“This was an impressive win for the girl's team without Julia,” he said, “but I knew we were capable of doing so whether she played or not. Everyone stepped up today and we got some big three-set wins from Micah at No. 1 and Jamie Lee at No. 6.”

Hermsdorf – the 32nd ranked singles player in Division II – today won her first match of the season at No. 1, in holding off 27th-ranked Monika Kochanova, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, and at No. 1 doubles with partner Hannah Kelley, they beat Kochanova and Giovana Patitucci, 8-5.

Laura Mongin, meanwhile, replaced her twin sister at No. 2 doubles with Brittney Reed, and they also won 8-5 over Luiza and Mariana Sonnervig. Mongin went on to defeat Mariana Sonnervig at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-1 for her 15th win of the season, tying her for the team lead with freshman Kaysie Hermsdorf.

Denton's win at No. 6 kept her record perfect at 9-0 as she came back from a set down to beat Fernanda Amaral, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

Unfortunately, ACU's 16th-ranked men's team did not experience the same level of success, as the Wildcats were toppled 8-1 by the third-ranked Argonauts.

Senior Hans Hach scored ACU's lone point at No. 1 singles, where he defeated eighth-ranked Kevin Ducros, 7-6, 7-5. Freshman Nicklas Wingord also put up a fight at No. 3 singles before ultimately falling to No. 43 Tony Rajaobelina, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

“I've said it before and I'll say it again,” said Jones, “but I really think this team is going to surprise some people at the conference championships. We've been playing some very tough teams as of late even though we're not at full strength, and this competition is only going to help us get better. We need to keep drawing positives from these defeats.”

The Wildcats conclude their trip Sunday with a doubleheader vs. future Southland Conference rival New Orleans. Both matches will start at 9 a.m.
