AUSTIN – Senior all-America Alex Carpenter won the 17th tournament of his illustrious collegiate career Tuesday here at the Grey Rock Golf Course after firing a final-round score of 4-over-par 76 to finish the St. Edward's Invitational at 3-under 213.
A native of Little Rock, Ark., Carpenter was only one of two competitors in a field of 85 to finish under par along with yesterday's leader, Kevin Witte of UC-Colorado Springs. Witte fell to second place at 1-under 215 after shooting 7-over today, while third-place finisher Ben Taylor carried second-ranked Nova Southeastern to the team title after recording the afternoon's lowest score of 3-under 69. Of the tournament's top 20-players, only Taylor and Edward Thomas III of Barton College finished their final round below par.
Barton claimed three players in the top 10 and tied the Wildcats for third place at 27-over 864. No. 5 ACU started the day tied for first place with Nova Southeastern at par-576, but slipped two spots after its top four players combined to finish 27 strokes over.
The Wildcats' slight fall in the standings allowed top-ranked Barry to take second-place honors at 24-over 888. The Buccaneers had two players tie for sixth and another tied for 15th, while Nova had all its competitors finish among the top 15 and the championship by 14 strokes (10-over 874).
ACU senior Kyle Dickerson played consistent most of the week and tied several other players for 15th at 7-over 223. Dickerson yesterday shots rounds of 73 and 74, but today finished at 4-over 76.
Veterans Trey Sullivan and Corbin Renner began the day tied for 18th but couldn't remain in contention after each shot over 80 in their respective third rounds. Sullivan placed 28th at 11-over 227, while Renner tied for 35th at 14-over 230.
In three trips to Grey Rock, Carpenter has earned two victories in between a fourth-place showing in 2012. Carpenter won here as a sophomore as part of his six-event winning streak with a 2-under 211, and last March finished at par-216.
Carpenter's win this week was his second of the season and first since winning the Charles W. Coody West Texas Intercollegiate last September.
The Wildcats return to action next Monday and Tuesday for the Southern California Intercollegiate, which is being hosted this by the Mission Viejo Country Club.
