LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Senior all-America Alex Carpenter won the 19th individual championship of his illustrious collegiate career Tuesday after shooting a 2-over-par 218 through three rounds in front of a hometown crowd at the Arkansas-Little Rock/First Tee Classic hosted by the Chenal Country Club.
Carpenter and his brothers, Adam and Luke, along with sophomore Corbin Renner are all Little Rock natives and graduates of Arkansas Baptist High School.
Despite recording his highest round of the two-day tournament this afternoon at 4-over 76, none of the other 65 competitors could gain any ground as Carpenter began the morning seven strokes ahead at 2-under 142. Carpenter carded a 73 in the first round and had a tournament-best 69 in the second, which was his 31st career round in the 60's.
Southeastern Louisiana's Eamon Bradley (73), Oral Roberts' Trevor McInroe (70) and Stephen F. Austin's Mitchell McLeroy (73) were the only three players today to do better than Carpenter, but all ended up in a five-way tie for second place along with UALR's Nick Zimmerman and Belmont's Elliott Wickenden.
Zimmerman began the day as Carpenter's closest rival at 5-over 149, but faltered down the stretch with a third-round score of 7-over 79 to finish at 12-over 228.
Bradley's score, along with three top-10 performances from his teammates, propelled Southeastern Louisiana to the team championship at 48-over 912. The Lions recorded a final-day score of 4-over 292 to overtake ACU, Arkansas-Little Rock and runner-up Stephen F. Austin in the team standings.
The Trojans (+57) and Wildcats (+61) started the day tied for the lead, but the hosts fired a 21-over 309 in the third round, while the Wildcats were a combined 25-over 313. Stephen F. Austin (+53) slid into second place thanks to an 11-over 299.
Rounding out the 11-team field were Oral Roberts (+70), Louisiana Monroe (+73), Illinois State (+76), St. Edward's (+82), Sam Houston State (+84), Belmont (+90) and Nebraska-Omaha (+110).
Renner was the only other Wildcat to finish in the top 20 as he tied for seventh at 13-over 229. Trey Sullivan and Luke Carpenter tied for 39th place at 26-over 242.
