LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Abilene Christian's men's and women's tennis teams each lost to nationally ranked No. 5 Hawaii Pacific Tuesday afternoon during their first day of competition at the Las Vegas Classic – a four-team round-robin tournament that also features Fresno Pacific and top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic.
ACU's No. 3 women's team (11-4) was doubled up, 6-3, by the undefeated Sea Warriors (9-0), while the Wildcats' 14th-ranked men's program fell, 8-1, with their only win coming from freshman
Nicklas Wingord at No. 3 singles. Wingord won his match over Maxime Halflants, 6-4, 6-3.
The Wildcat women entered singles with a 2-1 lead but couldn't hold onto it for long as Hawaii Pacific responded with victories at each position with the exception of No. 1, where No. 5
Julia Mongin defeated Ielyzaveta Rybakova, 6-2, 6-2. Mongin has won her last three matches after starting the year at 3-4.
In doubles, Mongin and
Micah Hermsdorf won their third straight together at No. 1, beating the duo of Magdalena Smejova and Vivian Hansen, 8-6, and at No. 2, the ACU team of
Brittney Reed and
Laura Mongin outlasted Lea Kruse-Utermann and Karen Ramirez, 8-2.
The Wildcats are in action Wednesday vs. Fresno Pacific, which lost both its matches yesterday to Armstrong Atlantic.
