Football’s Woerner named to the Capital One Academic All-District 7 First Team

ABILENE – Abilene Christian senior Thor Woerner Thursday was one of 24 players named to the Capital One Academic All-District 7 First Team by the voting members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A physical science major from Marble Falls, Texas, Woerner was joined on the team by three other linebackers: Caleb Lavey of Oklahoma State, Clint Barnard of New Mexico State and Zach Orr of North Texas. Their names will now be forwarded onto the ballot for Academic All-America along with the first team selections from Districts 1 through 8. District 7 includes all NCAA Division I schools from Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Woerner is the second Wildcat this fall to be named Academic All District 7 along with senior soccer player Brie Buschman.

A 2012 Lone Star Conference honorable mention, Woerner has started seven of nine games this season and come through with 65 tackles, four pass breakups, two interceptions and one sack, which is among his 4.5 tackles for loss (13 yards). In addition to his interception vs. McMurry, he also ran back a blocked PAT for two points in the Wildcats' 60-17 win.

For his work in the classroom, Woerner has been named to ACU's Dean's Honor Roll four times and its Athletics Honor Roll seven times. He also is a recipient of a D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award and earned a spot on the Lone Star Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll.

The Capital One Academic All-America Football Team will be released Thursday, Dec. 5.
