ABILENE - ACU head baseball coach Britt Bonneau announced Wednesday that he has added former Baylor pitcher Josh Scott to his staff as the team's pitching coach. Scott replaces Elliott Cribby, who left ACU after one season to become the pitching coach at Seattle University.
Scott has coached throughout the collegiate ranks since 2004, and most recently served as the catching and base running coach at Appalachian State. During the Mountaineers' 2013 season, they stole 100 bases and selected a walk-on catcher as Team MVP.
Prior to his arrival in Boone, N.C., Scott was the head coach of the Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League. During his second stint in Edenton (and first since 2007), he led the Steamers to a runner-up finish in the 2010 CPL championship race and coached the league's Pitcher of the Year, batting-title winner and seven all-stars.
His vast coaching experience also includes stints as an assistant at Long Beach State (2008-09), McLennan Community College (2007-08), New Mexico (2006-07) and Angelo State (2004-06). He also served as an assistant in various collegiate summer leagues from 2004-07, including the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League as an assistant for the Wareham Gatemen in 2006.
"We're very happy to add a coach like Josh Scott to our staff," Bonneau said. "He's very detailed-oriented and organized, and that's the kind of coach I wanted. He's had success as a player at Baylor and as a coach, so he'll know the kind of pitcher we're going to need to have success at this level."
Scott, the pitching coach at Angelo State University from 2004-06, helped the Rams' pitching staff produce the lowest ERA in the Lone Star Conference in 2005 and 2006. The 2006 team also won the regular-season conference championship.
While at New Mexico, Scott assisted with the development of the pitching staff and worked with hitters and outfielders. Lobo outfielders that season committed only four errors and had 16 outfield assists.
While at McLennan he served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator, and in 2007 the pitching staff set the school record for strikeouts in a season. While at Long Beach State, Scott supervised the pitching staff during practice and games and assisted with hitters, the bunting game and baserunning. The 49ers set the team record with 118 stolen bases and seven pitchers were drafted.
Scott was a three-year letterman for the Bears (1998-2000), compiling a 17-6 record and 4.57 ERA in 58 appearances. His best season came as a junior in 1999 when he went 10-2 in 21 appearances (16 starts) with 110 strikeouts in 105 1/3 innings of work.
While a Bear, he earned Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American honors in 1998, all-regional team honors at the Waco Regional in 1999 and at the Rice Regional in 2001, and was honored on the Big XII Commissioner's Honor Roll from 1999-2001. He was selected in the 25th round of the 2001 Major League Baseball Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies and spent two years as a pitcher in the Phillies' organization before beginning his coaching career.
A letterwinner in baseball and water polo at Warren High School in Downey, Calif., Scott was a three-year all-league honoree and received the Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award in 1997.
Scott earned his bachelor's degree in Psychology from Baylor in 2001 and his master's in Psychology from Angelo State in 2006. He is nephew of Houston Astros pitcher and 1986 Cy Young Award winner Mike Scott.
