HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Led by junior
Corbin Renner's fourth-place individual finish, the Abilene Christian golf team Tuesday placed second at the Sam Houston State Harold Funston Invitational.
This week's even was hosted by the par-71, 6,943-yard Raven Nest Golf Course.
Renner yesterday fired a two-round total of 138 as he followed a first-round 71 with a 4-under-par-67. But today he shot a third-round 72 to finish six strokes behind winner Zach Cabra of SHSU at 3-under-210. Cabra (9-under-204) was followed in the standings by teammate Albert Miner (6-under-207) and Scott Newell of Oral Roberts (5-under-208).
Houston's Matt Scobie, competing as an individual, rounded-out the top 5 with a 2-under-2011.
The one-two finish of Cabra and Miner allowed the Bearkats to run away with the team title at 7-under-845 as SHSU was the only school out of eight to finish under par. ACU (17-over-869) earned runner-up honors over Oral Roberts by three strokes (20-over-872). Stephen F. Austin was fourth (21-over-873) and Tyler Junior College placed fifth (23-over-875).
After Renner's 210, ACU's individuals were
Kyle Kennedy (11th place 73-69-74-216),
Kyle Karnei (tied for 20th at 73-74-74-221)
Trey Sullivan (tied for 24th at 76-70-76-222) and
Luke Carpenter (45th at 79-81-77-237).
The Wildcats return to action next week for The Territory Classic in Duncan, Okla. This will be ACU's final tournament of the fall season.
