Wildcats Welcome Three Teams For Whitten Inn Classic

ABILENE – The Abilene Christian softball team will make its 2012 home debut this weekend as part of the two-day, four-team Whitten Inn Classic. This year's opponents include East Central, Missouri Southern State, and Texas Woman's.

Games begin at 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and will run through the late afternoon. Individual game tickets ($5 per adult) and all-tournament passes ($25 for eight games) can be purchased at Poly Wells Stadium or via the tickets link on ACUSports.com.

ACU employees, retirees and dependents and students with valid ACU-issued IDs are admitted free of charge, as are all children under the age of 12.

The Wildcats kicked off their season with a solid showing at last weekend's St. Mary's Tournament, in which they won three of four games. After falling 6-3 to East Central, ACU rebounded to defeat St. Edward's, 6-2, Texas A&M-International, 4-0, and Rollins, 2-1.

Outfielders Keanna Winkfield and Madison Buckley paced the Wildcat offense by going a combined 13-for-25 (.520) with seven runs and six stolen bases. Courtney Flanary, Sarah Martinez, Lyndi Smith, and Sara Vaughn all hit home runs.

The pitching was exceptional as well. Newcomer Caitlyn Crain, a transfer from Odessa College, went 2-0, which included a complete game effort vs. Rollins. And earlier in the day, Peyton Mosley and Shelby Hall combined on a five-hit shutout of A&M-International.

ACU's defense also shined as it completed four double plays and committed just one error through 121 chances (.992).

The Wildcats will play two more home games Sunday following the Whitten Inn Classic, when they welcome Central Oklahoma for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
