Crain And Company Hold Off Rollins, 2-1

SAN ANTONIO - The Abilene Christian softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Friday's competition at the St. Mary's Classic following its 2-1 win over Rollins College.

Caitlyn Crain improved to 2-0 on the young season behind 7.0 innings of work, in which she struck out one and scattered seven hits and a pair of walks. Rollins scored its lone run in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Meredith Foster.

The Tars also threatened in the second and thought they'd scored the game's first run, but the umpires ruled that Aimee Halpin left third base early on Lawna Hunter's fly ball to right.

Rollins put two more runners on base in the seventh with two outs, but Crain rallied to end the game with a strike out of Hunter.

The win improved ACU's overall record to 3-1, while Rollins fell to 2-1.

The Wildcats scored both of their runs in the third. Sarah Martinez led off the inning with a home run to right, and four batters later, Kimberley Briggs drove in Keanna Winkfield on a single to center.

Briggs' hit was ACU's last until the sixth inning when the Bakersfield, Calif., native singled again to finish the game 2-for-3.

Rollins' starter Hope Bitzer (1-1) struck out six Wildcats in the losing effort.

ACU completes its stay in San Antonio Saturday with a doubleheader vs. Eastern New Mexico (10 a.m.) and Texas-Permian Basin (12 p.m.).
