DENTON – The ACU Wildcats ran their record to 10-1 on Friday with a pair of victories at the 2012 Best Western Premier Spring Fling.
The Wildcats blanked Central Missouri, 8-0, in five innings early Friday afternoon before needing nine innings to knock off Texas-Permian Basin, 2-1, in their final game of the day. ACU will be back in action Saturday at 9 a.m. when it takes on Texas A&M International and then again at 11:30 a.m. against St. Edward's.
In the win over the Falcons, ACU and UTPB battled through seven scoreless innings before the Falcons finally broke through with a run in the top of the eighth against ACU pitcher
Caitlyn Crain. But the Wildcats were able to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning when
Sarah Martinez drove a one-out double to left-centerfield that drove in
Brianna Fowlkes with the game-tying run.
The Lady Falcons couldn't push a run across in the top of the ninth, but ACU was able to do just that to win the game.
Keanna Winkfield was placed at second to start the bottom of the ninth and she went to third on a wild pitch.
Sara Vaughn then grounded out to second, and on the throw, Winkfield broke for the plate and scored to give the Wildcats the win.
Crain went the distance, giving up just four hits and one unearned run while walking one and striking out six batters to pick up the win and run her record to 4-0 on the season.
The Wildcats had little trouble with the Jennies of Central Missouri in the opener, scoring four runs in the first and then two in the third and two more in the fifth to end the game on the eight-run rule.
Vaughn had a pair of hits and two RBI in the game, while leadoff hitter
Madison Buckley was 1 for 2 with two runs scored.
Kimberly Briggs,
Megan Brigance, Martinez and
Courtney Flanary each drove in a run as every Wildcat in the lineup either had a hit, scored a run or drove in a run.
The beneficiary of all that offense was sophomore pitcher
Peyton Mosley, who went five innings and allowed just two hits while striking out four Jennies to run her record to 4-1.
