Mosley Deals 9.0 Innings, Leads ACU To 4-3 Win At #20 MSU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Sophomore Peyton Mosley overcame a rough start in leading Abilene Christian to a 4-3 (9) comeback victory over 20th-ranked Midwestern State Friday afternoon at the Holiday Inn at the Falls Invitational.

Winners of seven straight, the Wildcats improved to 7-1 behind Mosley's effort, while the Mustangs dropped to 6-4.

Mosley (2-1) surrendered two runs in the first before settling down over the next five innings, in which she allowed just two hits. The Mustangs appeared poised to win the game in the seventh after loading the bases with one out, but Mosley induced a pair of infield pop ups to send the game into extra innings.

Mosley escaped a second jam in the ninth, getting Carey Campbell to end the game on a fly out with the tying run stationed at third.

After falling behind 2-0, the Wildcats struck back with two of their own in the second as catcher Erin Gilliand and designated player Courtney Flanary smacked consecutive one-out RBI singles. Gilliand's hit plated Lyndi Smith, and then Flanary drove in Sarah Martinez to tie the game.

The score remained knotted until the eighth where ACU converted its first tiebreaker on Kimberly Briggs' sac fly. But MSU answered quickly because of an error by Martinez who was covering first on Mallory Mooney's sacrifice bunt attempt. The dropped throw sent Elena Bennett home from second; however, Mosley remained steady and recorded the next three outs in order.

The Wildcats scored in similar fashion in the ninth as Martinez drove the ball deep enough to plate the game-winning run. A sacrifice bunt from Smith put Ashley Nolan in position to score on the fly out.

Lyndsi Glenn took the loss in falling to 5-3 on the season. Glenn also pitched 9.0 innings, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks. She struck out two.

The Wildcats continue tournament play Saturday at Burkburnett High School where they'll face Fort Hays State and Texas A&M-International, beginning at 11 a.m.
