Carpenter wins national honor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – ACU sophomore Alex Carpenter has been named the Southern Golf Association's National Amateur of the Month for March, the SGA announced Thursday.

Carpenter has now won the award twice this school year having won the award last October after he reeled off four straight tournament wins.

The native of Little Rock, Ark., began the month of March by winning the Golfweek NCAA Division II Invitational at Reunion Resoret near Orlando, Fla., where the top 16 NCAA Division II teams competed.  He finished the month by winning the Dallas Baptist Invitational by two shots at the Golf Club of Dallas.

Near the end of the month he played in the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Fla., having earned his way into the tournament by winning the Southern Amateur last summer.

The two wins gave Carpenter a remarkable 11 individual titles in less than two full seasons as a Wildcat.  The second-highest number of career victories by an ACU player is six by current pro golfer Jeev Singh, who played at ACU from 1991-93.

The reigning Southern Amateur champion, Carpenter is scheduled to defending that title in the 105th Southern Amateur at Innisbrook Resort near Tampa, Fla., in July.
