Smith, Calles Go Deep in Win

ABILENE – Lyndi Smith and Ashley Calles both homered twice and Brittany Rexroat pitched a three hitter putting the Wildcats in at least sole possession of third place as they took down Texas A&M-Kingsville, 8-0 on Saturday afternoon at Wells Field.
Needing a win as ACU now sits 24-23 on the season and 9-6 in league play, the Wildcats put all phases of the game together to dispatch of the Javelinas via a run rule victory. TAMKU falls to 23-24 overall and 4-11 in the South Division, while ACU will host St. Edward's in a mid-week double-header on Monday before returning to conference play.
Lyndi Smith and Ashley Calles each hit two home runs and went 3-for-3 on the day accounting for nearly half of the Wildcats' 14 hits. Calles also finished with four RBIs as she was moved to the designated player role for the first time this season while Smith added a pair of RBIs.
In the circle, senior Brittany Rexroat won her 11th of the season as she won back-to-back games for the first time since early March. Rexroat was even more dominating on Saturday after she got back on the winning track Friday night. She struck out two and only walked one while holding the Javelina bats at bay with only three hits. After the back-to-back shutout wins Rexroat has seen her ERA drop below four sitting at 3.80 and is now 11-7 on the year.
TAMKU never threatened in the game as they left four runners on base, two of which came in the second inning. Amanda Arriaga pitched all four innings for TAMKU and picked up the loss.
Missy Mendoza continues to make a run at the ACU single season hits record as she recorded two hits on the day. The hits give her 72 on the season just 14 shy of the single season mark as her double also put her six behind Jenny Kulp's 21 who set the record just a year ago.
The Wildcats and Hilltoppers will play a double-header on Monday starting at 6 p.m. before closing out the road portion of their schedule on Friday and Saturday in San Angelo.
