SAN ANGELO – The Wildcat softball team fell to No. 3 Midwestern State for the fourth time this season in as many tries as Christina Gutierrez pitched a complete game for the Mustangs as they beat ACU, 9-2 to open the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament on Friday afternoon.
ACU falls to 20-17 with the loss as the Mustangs are 32-3 on the season and ranked No. 3 in the latest NFCA top 25 poll. The Wildcats will play a double-header on Saturday against North Division foes Cameron and Northeastern State starting at 11 a.m.
MSU jumped out to an early 6-0 lead as they batted around in the first capped off by a Carey Campbell home run. The Mustangs would take advantage of four Wildcat errors on the day as only four runs were earned, three to starter
Shelby Hall and one to
Brittany Rexroat.
Rexroat entered in the first and settled the Mustangs bats down going 5.1 innings only allowing two hits and striking out one.
The Mustangs were powered by Gutierrez who scattered six hits over seven innings while striking out five Wildcats.
Missy Mendoza recorded two of the six ACU hits while
Erin Gilliland picked up both Wildcat RBIs.
