WICHITA FALLS – Brittney Tanner pitched a one-hitter for No. 13 Midwestern State as they knocked off the Wildcats, 3-0, to open the Holiday Inn at the Falls/Midwestern State Invitational Friday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
With the loss ACU falls to 11-12 while the 13th-ranked Mustangs improved to 18-1 on the season. ACU returns to action on Saturday with a double-header at the MSU Invitational.
Tanner was outstanding for the Mustangs as she stymied the Wildcats to only one hit, a fourth inning one out single from
Candice Miller. Miller would be erased in the inning as well trying to steal second for the final out.
Despite the Wildcats troubles at the plate ACU managed to reach four base runners, three via MSU errors and a Tanner base on balls. All four would be stranded as the Wildcats were not able to push home a run as Tanner also struck out seven Wildcats in the effort.
Midwestern State put together back to back hits to start the second inning, and would take an early, 1-0 lead on a Carey Campbell single to right.
The Mustangs would plate two more runs in the third on a Mallory Mooney double driving in two. Mooney would also see her 48-game errorless streak come to an end on a fielding error in the top of the second.
Shelby Hall would go the distance for ACU, but come up on the short end after scattering nine hits over six innings. Hall walked one and struck out one as she fell to 3-8 on the season.
The Wildcats open up tomorrow's tournament action at 1 p.m. against Arkansas Tech and finish at 3 p.m. with Incarnate Word. ACU finishes up the Midwestern State Invitational on Sunday with a pair of games against Fort Hays State and St. Edward's.
