Wildcats Sweep MSU 3-0

ABILENE – The Abilene Christian volleyball team couldn't have scripted a better Senior Night as the trio of Kelsie Edwards, Jennie Hutt and Aubree Vick were all major contributors in a 3-0 win over Midwestern State Thursday at Moody Coliseum.
The Wildcats avenged last month's loss at Wichita Falls, winning by scores of 30-28, 25-22 and 25-18, which lifted their season and conference records to 19-12 and 13-6 – 2.0 games ahead of Tarleton State in the win column. The Mustangs, losers of five straight, slipped to 15-14 and 7-12.
ACU hit .238 for the match led by the usual suspects Hutt (18 kills) and Sara Oxford (11), but Vick – in her first start since Sept. 10 due to injury – delivered the most inspiring performance with a double-double of 10 kills (.241) and 10 digs.
“It was special to see Aubree, someone who has worked so hard for so long, come back and have a big night,” head coach Kellen Mock said. “She is one of this team's unsung heroes and is dedicated to everything she does especially on those days when she works from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the hospital and then shows up to practice or a match.”
Vick, a nursing major, deflected much of the credit for tonight's performance to her teammates.
“It felt great to start even though I was a little nervous,” she said. “But my teammates enabled me to play all three games and I really pulled from them. We fell apart last time vs. MSU, but we're mentally tougher now and are staying aggressive, which made it easier for us to come back from those deficits.”
The Wildcats started game one in two gaping holes of 6-0 and 9-2 as several errors combined with three Mustang blocks put ACU's collective backs firmly against the wall. But just like they have time and time again over the past month, the Wildcats scratched and clawed their way back, first reeling off four straight points to get within three, and then scoring on seven of nine rallies to tie the game at 15-15.
Hutt was close to flawless in the first game, and at one point, struck down five consecutive kills for the Wildcats.
Getting back into the game was much easier than finishing it as ACU failed several times to win the set point, but luckily for the Wildcats, the Mustangs also faltered down the stretch. MSU took its last lead at 27-26 and had the serve, but Vick broke it with a kill to tie the game and then Mustang Kiara Jordan fumbled the ball on an attempted assist.
Oxford returned the point with a miscue of her own, but immediately bailed herself out with a kill followed by another from Hutt. Freshman setter Haley Rhoades set up both points and finished the match with 43 assists.
Game two was even more competitive between the two sides as they swapped the lead eight times and tied each other on 17 occasions. ACU appeared to have the set in hand after going on a 3-0 run in taking a 20-18 lead, but MSU bounced back to knot the game twice more at 20-20 and 21-21.
Vick, however, would give her team the lead for good with a kill on the very next possession and then blocked Hillary White's shot with Oxford. ACU collected the next two points on a pair of Mustang attack errors.
The start of set three felt like it could be a carbon copy of the first two, but that was until ACU posted a 5-0 run that flipped a 13-11 deficit into a 16-13 lead. From there, the Mustangs couldn't get any closer than two points of the lead as the Wildcats finished the game on a 7-2 run, which included three big kills from Oxford, one more from Vick, and then the match clincher from Hutt.
The ACU defense, led by Kelsie Edwards' 16 digs, held MSU to a .172 hitting percentage, and Madelyn Robinette led all players with three service aces.
ACU returns to action Saturday vs. Cameron in the regular-season finale for both schools. The Wildcats are 9-1 at Moody Coliseum this season.
