ACU led the first set from start to finish and at one point enjoyed an 11-point lead at 21-11 before the Javelinas made their move in ripping off six consecutive points. Kingsville began its rally with three kills, including two by Bethany Friesenhahn, and then was helped by three straight attacking errors.
ACU called a timeout to halt the Javelina rally and immediately benefitted from an Ali Inseli service error that extended its lead back to six. The two sides exchanged points from there with the set ending on a Neely Borger kill.
The second set was a bit more competitive as it experienced four ties and three lead changes, the last of which was at 15-15. Consecutive kills from Hutt and Rhoades mixed in with a service ace from Borger pushed the ACU lead to three and then it became a five-point game at 20-15 following two errors from Stephanie Johns. Kingsville trimmed its deficit to four points twice down the stretch, but was stymied yet again by another attacking error that brought the Widlcats to set point.
ACU ran away with the third set in scoring 14 of the next 16 points after being down 6-5. At one point the Wildcats rattled off five straight points in between two timeouts taken by the Javelinas as consecutive kills by Hutt were immediately followed by three straight attacking errors, the last two of which were by Kelsey Washington.
Despite being down 11 at 20-9, Kingsville still had a little fight left and closed the gap to 20-15 thanks to kills by Lakeshia Craft, Washington and Lauryn Lozano in addition to errors by Hutt. Afterward ACU went on another four-point mini-run with three of those points contributed by the opposition, bringing the score to 24-15. Allen then clinched the match by killing an floater sent over by Kingsville.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday for their first of two meeting with Tarleton State. The match in Stephenville begins at 2 p.m.
