GOLDEN, Colo. – The Wildcat volleyball team earned a well deserved split on the final day of the Oredigger Classic hosted by Colorado School of Mines Saturday afternoon. ACU opened with a, 3-0 loss to Regis before knocking off Mesa State in an exciting, 3-2 win.
For the first time since a 3-0 loss at West Texas A&M on Sept. 17, ACU dropped a match 3-0 falling to Regis 25-17, 25-18 and 25-22. With only five blocks as a team and a .105 hitting percentage the Wildcats failed to get much going against the Rangers.
Jennie Hutt led the Wildcats with 10 kills and 16 digs for another double-double.
Shawna Hines combined for only four blocks and five kills in the loss.
In the afternoon match ACU dropped the first set to the Mavericks, 25-22 but rallied to take the next two sets 25-20, and 25-19. Mesa State evened the match with a 25-23 win in the fourth but ACU outlasted the Mavericks 15-12.
The Wildcat defense showed up as they produced 18.5 blocks with EJ Moronu leading the way with 12 total blocks. She also added 48 assists for her second double-double of the early season.
Shawna Hines added eight blocks and 19 kills followed by
Jennie Hutt and
Neely Borger who both added seven blocks respectively. Hutt added 12 kills for the Wildcats just missing another double-double.
ACU will return to action next weekend as they travel to St. Edward's in Austin for the Hilltopper Invitational.
