Wildcats win pair in Austin


AUSTIN – Jennie Hutt posted 21 kills and 13 digs in a pair of matches Friday as ACU won both its matches in the St. Edward's Volleyball Classic at the Convocation and Recreation Center.

The Wildcats (4-2) will be back on the court Saturday at 3 p.m. when they play Missouri Southern State and then again at 7 p.m. against the tournament hosts from St. Edward's.

ACU took down Northwest Missouri State, 3-1, Friday morning and then knocked off Dallas Baptist, 3-0, Friday evening.

In the first match, the Wildcats knocked off the Lady Bearcats, 25-15, 26-28, 25-19, 25-21, using a strong offensive performance to win their tournament opener.

ACU hit .542 in the first set and .406 in the fourth set to key an offense that hit .311 in the match compared to just .141 for the Lady Bearcats.

In the fourth set with the score tied 20-20, the Wildcats outscored Northwest 5-1 to end the set and the match.  Shawna Hines had a kill to put ACU in front, followed by kills from E.J. Moronu, Hutt, Hines and Hutt to finish it.

Kalynne Allen led the Wildcats with 14 kills and 13 digs, followed by Hines with 11 kills and five block assists, Hutt with 10 kills and five digs and Jordan Schilling with 12 kills and 12 digs.  Moronu finished with 48 assists, eight kills and 13 digs.

In the win over Dallas Baptist, the Wildcats wasted little time in dispatching the Patriots, 25-16, 26-24, 25-22.  Hutt finished with 11 kills and eight digs, followed by Hines with eight kills and four block assists.

ACU hit .440 in the first set to pace an offense that hit a combined .270 in the match compared to just .118 for Dallas Baptist.

In the third set, ACU trailed 20-19 before reeling off six of the final eight points of the match.
