ABILENE – Two consecutive trips to the Lone Star Conference Tournament have the Wildcats hungry for what is next. Head coach Casey Wilson opened fall camp this week as the Wildcats bring in a good mix of returners and freshmen to the pitch.
After struggling to score at times in 2009 ACU has added what Wilson believes could be the difference makers on offense. Courtney Wilson returns for her senior season as the leading scorer a year ago for the Wildcats along with Julie Coppedge who was primarily used as a defender her freshmen season. Lexi Stirling another second year player returns as she added three goals as well.
Returning from injury are Krysta Grimm who sat out half the season but played well on offense the second part of the year. Also returning is Ashley Holton who sat out last season because of a knee injury as well should add some offenseive punch as she was two time conference player of the year before transfering to ACU.
A solid defensive group last year the Wildcats look may be even more improved . Bre Craig and Kendall Cooper return to anchor the defense while Anastasia Nelson returns to the middle after also missing last season due to injury. Two freshmen will push for playing time as well Brie Buschman and Jacey Ferrara have both impressed and should see time in the backfield as well.
New to the Wildcats looking to push for playing time include Andrea Carpenter a freshmen from Canyon, Texas. Carpenter's speed early in practice has impressed coaches and might earn her a spot in the starting lineup. Other freshmen looking to make an impact include Roxy Marsh, Ashley Craig, Kristen Cavallo, and Whitley Lindholm. Lindholm comes from a family of athletes as her brother Garrett was an all-America kicker at Tarleton State.
A trio of Wildcats will try to replace two year starter and LSC Goalkeeper of the Year Crissy Lawson as Arielle Moncure and Elliott London will battle for the starting job. Moncure and London both saw action last season when Lawson missed two games to injury including a first half shuout of West Texas A&M from London before going down with a shoulder injury of her own.
ACU opens the season in Colorado on September 2 where they will play the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and Colorado State-Pueblo before returning for the home opener.
