Bouniol headed for nationals

DUNCAN, Okla. -- The ACU Wildcats' spring season came to a disappointing end Wednesday as they finished seventh at the NCAA Division II South / South Central Super Regional golf tournament at The Territory Golf Course.

Only the top five teams in the tournament -- regardless of region -- qualified for the NCAA Division II national tournament. However, the top two individuals not on a qualifying team also earned spots in the national tournament field, and with his second-place finish overall, ACU junior Cyril Bouniol has qualified for a spot in the national tournament.

The national tournament is scheduled for May 18-21 at the Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind.

The Wildcats made a valiant run at the top five after starting the final round in 14th place. Playing against a horrific wind and agianst what ACU head coach Mike Campbell said were the "toughest pin placements" he's ever seen at the course, the Wildcats manage to shoot 16-over-par 304 to give them a three-round total of 916.

As the day grew longer the scores kept coming in higher and higher and the Wildcats continued to move up the leaderboard. However, later in the day the winds died down and the scores got a little bit better.

The Wildcats eventually finished six shots out of fifth place as Cameron finished fifth at 910, two strokes ahead of sixth-place Midwestern State and six ahead of seventh-place ACU.

Central Missouri won the team championship at 904, followed by Wayne State at 905, Ferris State at 908, Bellarmine at 909 and Cameron at 910.

Bouniol, however, will represent the Wildcats at the national tournament as he fired a third-round 72 to finish at 4-over-par 220 over three rounds and one shot out of first place. Central Missouri's Justin Yoder won the individual championship with a three-round total of 219.
