ABILENE -- ACU and Midwestern State split a non-conference softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Wells Field with the Wildcats taking the first game and the Mustangs winning the nightcap.
The Wildcats got a solid pitching performance from freshman
Shelby Hall in the first game en route to a 7-2 win before MSU bounced back to score seven times in its first two at-bats in to take the second game of the twinbill, 14-2.
The split leaves the Wildcats at 6-7 on the season and Midwestern State at 9-3. ACU will be back in action this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at St. Mary's and St. Edward's, respectively.
In the first game, the Wildcats jumped on MSU starting pitcher Brittany Tanner with three runs in the first, one in the second, two in the third and one more in the fourth.
In the first, Missy Mendoza doubled to lead off the game and scored on
Shawna Barrow's RBI triple.
Stephanie Tingle then laid down a squeeze bunt that plated Barrow to make it 2-0. Later in the inning,
Jenny Kulp drove in Tingle with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
ACU tacked on an unearned run in the second when Mendoza scored on a Barrow double to push the ACU lead to 4-0. In the third inning,
Genevie Ramirez drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk and
Caitlin Nabors singled in a run to make it 6-0.
Ramirez closed the scoring in the fourth inning with an RBI single that drove in
Candice Miller.
Hall scattered eight hits over seven complete innings, striking out one batter and walking a pair of Mustangs.
Midwestern State jumped on ACU starting pitcher Jacque Gregoire with seven runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings of work. MSU jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings before salting the game with seven more runs in the third inning.
