Harrison powers ACU to extra-inning win

Alex Harrison tripled to help force extra innings in the bottom of the ninth and then hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the 12th inning as the Abilene Christian Wildcats salvaged a split with New Mexico Highlands by taking a 3-2 win Sunday at Crutcher Scott Field.
After dropping the first two games to the Mustangs in the four-game set, the Wildcats rebounded to win the final two contests including head coach Britt Bonneau's 500th career win Saturday night.
The No.-11 ranked Wildcats moved to 3-2 on the season Sunday thanks to the late-game heroics of Harrison and strong pitching efforts by Preston Vancil and Brad Rutherford.
The game began as a pitcher's duel with Vancil and NMHU's Gorman Romero battling it out. Initially, Romero got the better of the Wildcats holding ACU scoreless for eight innings while the Mustangs led 2-0.
However, Romero surrendered a double to Thomas Bumpass with one out and Harrison responded with a triple over the head of Mustang leftfielder Danny Brown scoring Bumpass. The next hitter, Travis Latz, flied out to center field, but it was deep enough to score Harrison. The Wildcats then strung together two-straight singles by Cameron Watten and Steve Camillucci and both advanced a base on a balk. However, Davis Page grounded out to end the inning.
Romero finished with 8.2 innings pitched and he struck out seven hitters. Four relievers came in and held ACU scoreless, however, Andy Herman came in to face Harrison in the bottom of the 12th with two outs and Harrison delivered again by singling home Chris Hall for the winning road.
Vancil lasted seven innings, scattered seven hits and allowed just one run while striking out nine. Rutherford went the remainder of the game surrendering a run in the eighth when Crespin Perez hit a solo homer for the Mustangs. However, Rutherford allowed just one more hit the rest of the game and picked up his second win of the season to move to 2-0.
NMHU entered the series at 2-2 and left Abilene with a 4-4 record. The Wildcats return to action Thursday through Saturday with a four-game set with Southwestern Oklahoma at Crutcher Scott field in the Lone Star Conference opening series for both teams.
