ACU to appeal NCAA sanctions

ABILENE ? Abilene Christian University has taken the first step to appeal a ruling by the NCAA that would strip the football team of all 10 of its 2007 victories.
In its infractions report delivered to ACU almost two weeks ago, the NCAA ordered the school to vacate all victories and subsequent records and statistics from those wins in a 10-3 season that ended in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.
When the report was released to the public on Feb. 12, ACU president Dr. Royce Money said the NCAA's sanctions against the football program had caught the school “by surprise” and that the university would strongly consider an appeal. The university ? through its outside legal counsel ? sent a letter to the NCAA late Tuesday afternoon to let it know that the university planned to appeal the ruling.
“We have taken the last couple of weeks to thoroughly review the final report from the NCAA Committee on Infractions and have decided to move forward with our appeal of the imposed penalty against the football program,” ACU director of athletics Jared Mosley said.
Once ACU receives notification from the NCAA Division II Management Council Subcommittee that it has received the university's notice of its plan to appeal, it has 30 days to file the written appeal.
