Fleet, Jones come up big in first meet

ABILENE -- The addition of two 2007 Texas Class 5A high school state champions in the throwing events quickly paid dividends for coach Don D. Hood of the men's track and field team at Abilene Christian University.
Competing in their first collegiate outdoor meet here Friday, Tyler Fleet and Nick Jones both reached the automatic qualifying standard in the discus throw for the 2008 NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships May 22-24 in Walnut, Calif.
Fleet, freshman from Tyler Lee, threw 176 feet,10 inches, for second, and Jones, freshman from Amarillo Tascosa, threw 175-11 for third in the event behind Texas Tech's Brett McDaniel, who won with 182-5.
Fleet, who was the state champion in the discus throw last spring, also won the hammer throw here Friday with a toss of 176-7. Jones, who won the state title in the shot put in 2007, was runner-up in the shot put here Friday at 51-2.25 behind another Tech thrower, Tyler Menges (54-3.25).
Also at the Oliver Jackson Classic Friday at Gray Stadium at ACU, sophomore quartermiler Jordan Johnson made his first appearance for the Wildcats since winning the NCAA Division II outdoor 400 as a freshman in 2006. After missing the 2007 season, he opened the 2008 outdoor season with a comfortable win of 48.79 seconds in the 400 meters in the cool, windy conditions.
The only other wins by the ACU men's team came from Harold Jackson in the 800 (2:00.53), Serge Gasore in the 1,500 (4:03.25), Nicaise Kazingo in the 5,000 (15:09.88), Billy Walker in the 110 hurdles (14.40), and Brad Tatum in the pole vault (15-3).
The ACU men also won both relays in 42.07 and 3:25.34.
In the discus, Jones actually led through the preliminary throws with his second-round mark of 175-6, but the Red Raiders' McDaniel took the lead in the fifth round with 178-6 and improved to 182-5 on his final attempt.
The ACU women picked up victories from three distance runners -- Mary Mwangi in the 800 (2:19.28), Loice Cheboi in the 1,500 (4:47.75) and Winrose Karunde in the 3,000 (9:58.64) ? along with Linda Brivule in the javelin (145-0).
McMurry grabbed runner-up performances from Sarah Ashton (5,000) and Shenice Johnson (long jump) of its women's team and Todd Neeer (steeplechase) of its men's team.
Tarleton State picked up three victories by Morgan Kuykendall in the women's 5,000 (20:20.52), Laura Skinner in the women's high jump (5-2.25), and Aaron Schickendanz in the men's high jump (6-4).
Four former local collegiate stars also won their events competing unattached. Former McMurry standout Darcell Edwards won the women's long jump at 18-9.75), and wins by former ACU performers included Stephanie Warren in the women's triple jump (40-11.5), Marvin Bien-Aime in the men's 100 (10.50) and Yevgen Pashchenko in the men's triple jump (50-8.25).
The Wildcats will compete next in Mankato, Minn., in the NCAA Division II national indoor championships Friday and Saturday, March 14-15. Last year the Abilene Christian men were second, and the women were fourth.
