SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. -- Playing in one of the strongest fields outside the NCAA Division II national tournament on Monday and Tuesday, the fifth-ranked ACU Wildcat golf team finished eighth at the Southern California Intercollegiate at Marbella Country Club.
 
Seventh-ranked West Florida won the tournament with a three-round total of 838 (275-280-283), easily outdistancing second-place and fourth-ranked Barry (Fla.), which finished at 865 (284-291-290).  Third-ranked St. Edward's was third at 871, followed by No. 19 Sonoma State in fourth (872) and No. 18 Cal State-Chico in fifth at 892.
 
The Wildcats -- ranked No. 5 in the nation, accorind go the Golf World / Nike poll -- fired rounds of 295-293-309 to finish in eighth at 897.  To illustrate how competitive the tournament was, the Wildcats' round of 309 on Tuesday was the highest  posted by any team in the tournaement.
 
ACU's Lone Star Conference rivals, Central Oklahoma and Cameron -- tied for ninth nationally -- finished ninth and 10th, respectively, in the team chase.
 
Freshman Hugues Joannes was ACU's best finisher in the individual medalist chase as he placed tied for 11th at 217 (68-73-76).  Hilton Funk and Stephen Knight each tied for 34th with scores of 226.  Kyle Byerly finished tied for 42nd at 229 (75-77-77), while Curtis Harris was tied for 61st at 236 (76-77-83).
 
The Wildcats will return to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Harbor Lakes Invitational in Granbury.
