Newest facility dedicated

ABILENE -- The newest athletics facility on campus was dedicated Saturday morning in a ceremony that celebrated one of the baseball's programs most generous families.
The Bonneau Family Indoor Batting Facility was officially opened Saturday before the Wildcats got the 2007 baseball season underway at Crutcher Scott Field. The 5,625-square foot facility bears the name of ACU head coach Britt Bonneau's family, which made a generous contribution to the facility. Also donating to the facility were Dr. Bart Bourland, Rex Klepper and Trey Smith.
Construction on the $235,000 facility began last February and was completed around Nov. 1, 2006. The building began as a dream and a drawing on a lunch napkin and is now reality.
"I remember sitting with my best friend, Dan Haught, about two years ago and he asked what we needed to take our program to another level," Britt Bonneau said. "We drew a facility out on a napkin where we were having lunch, and now here we are dedicating this building. After we talked that day about two years I went back to coaching and before I knew it, Dan had scheduled meetings with our administrators and started putting things on paper."
With the harsh winter weather that Abilene has endured the last six weeks, the facility has already gotten steady usage from both the ACU baseball and softball teams, as well as a weekly hitting league made up of kids from the Abilene community.
"This is a great way for our program to reach out to the community," Bonneau said. "This is a great facility than can serve not only ACU, but the community itself."
Bonneau became emotional when talking about the name that the facility will bear for its lifetime.
"I won't live the life my father has lived, or that of his father, and that's not my goal," he said. "My goal is to be an influence on the guys on my team so that when they think of the Bonneau name it's nothing but positive thoughts."
