GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- The ACU Wildcats couldn't hold off a strong second-day charge by both Cal State-Stanislaus and Grand Canyon as the Wildcats finished third Tuesday in the always-tough Grand Canyon Fall Invitational at Estrella Mountain Ranch Golf Club.
The Wildcats finished tied for third with national powerhouse Cal State-Bakersfield at 859 over three rounds. ACU had the lead after Monday's first two rounds as it shot a 567 (280-287) to carry a one-shot leader Cal State-Stanislaus into the final round.
But the Wildcats shot a final-round 292 while Stanislaus shot a tournament-low 278 on Tuesday to pull away and finish at 846. Grand Canyon was second at 856 after shooting rounds of 280-292-284. Bakersfield tied ACU on Tuesday with a final-round 289 to finish at 285-285-289.
The Wildcats were led individually by newcomer Hugues Joannes, who fired three sub-par rounds on the par-72, 7,139-yard course. Joannes blistered the course with an opening-ropund 67 on Monday and then followed that with a second-round 70 to finish the first day at 5-under-par. He posted a three-under-par 69 on Tuesday to finish at 206 for the tournament and in second place in the individual standings.
ACU's other finishers were Curtis Harris (tied for 25th; 69-74-75--218); Erik Manning (tied for 28th; 74-70-75--219); Kyle Byerly (tied for 28th; 73-73-73--219); and Patrick Hanauer (tied for 44th; 71-76-75--222).
