Wildcats upend No. 15 Roadrunners
ACU beats Metro State in three games to finish 2-2
CANYON -- ACU erased a poor morning performance with a spectacular evening effort in a three-game win over No. 15 Metro State (Colo.) in the final match of the First General Services West Texas A&M Lady Buff Classic.
ACU finished the four-match weekend with a 2-2 record, and will play its first home game of the season Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Wayland Baptist.
The Wildcats were swept 3-0 by Adams State (Colo.) Saturday morning in a match that lasted a mere 70 minutes. ACU hit just .169 in the three games, while Adams State hit .298. ACU senior outside hitter Michelle Bernhardt -- who was named to the all-tournament team -- finished with 14 kills, the only Wildcat who finished the match in double figures in kills.
The Wildcats, however, bounced back to take a big win over Metro State, which entered the match ranked No. 15 in the American Volleyball Coaches' Association pre-season poll.
Bernhardt had 17 kills and seven digs in the match, while freshman Abbie Lowry had 10 kills. Junior setter Lindsey Martin had 33 assists and four digs, while senior libero Kellen Morrow had 13 digs.
"We didn't play very well (Saturday) morning, but we really bounced back and played well against Metro State," ACU head coach Brek Horn said. "It would have been nice to have gotten both matches, but we're happy that we were able to knock off Metro State."
