Wildcats win 2 of 3 in Lubbock
ACU improves to 7-4 before start of LSC play
LUBBOCK -- ACU sandwiched wins over Loyola (La.) and Wayland Baptist around a loss to Lubbock Christian on Friday and Saturday at the LCU Chap Classic.
ACU's 2-1 weekend improved the Wildcats to 7-4 on the season. The Wildcats will begin Lone Star Conference South Division play this week with a pair of road matches at Eastern New Mexico (Friday night) and West Texas A&M (Saturday evening).
The young Wildcats are picked to finish third in the LSC South behind the Lady Buffs and Zias, respectively.
The Wildcats opened the Chap Classic on Friday with a 30-24, 30-28, 30-23 win over Loyola (La.). Freshman outside hitter Michelle Bernhardt led the Wildcats with 12 kills, while sophomore Kellen Morrow had 15 digs and three service aces.
ACU opened Saturday's play with a 30-26, 30-28, 28-30, 30-22 loss to Lubbock Christian, which is ranked No. 12 in the latest NAIA national poll. Junior outside hitter Haylee Hartline led ACU with 22 kills in the match, while senior Grae Grimes had 23 digs.
The Wildcats, though, bounced back Saturday afternoon to defeat Wayland Baptist in three games, 30-28, 30-21, 30-23. Bernhardt again led the way with 14 kills, and freshman Nicole Killebrew had 16 digs.
