Wells Field will serve as the Wildcats’ softball home for the 14th season in 2010. The field was officially dedicated as the A.E. (Poly) and Zieta Wells Field on Saturday, March 29, 1997. Dr. Gary McCaleb, vice president of the university, gave the dedication in honor of Zieta and her late husband, A.E. After the death of her husband, Zieta Wells made an estate gift to the university to finance a major portion of the stadium.
The Wildcats?actually played their first game on the field on Feb. 22, 1997, when they swept a doubleheader against Texas Wesleyan. ACU won its first eight games and 10 of its first 11 at Wells Field.
In 2009 ACU hosted the its first Lone Star Confernece Post-Season Tournament at Wells Field. The Wildcats won their half of the bracket and hosted the Championship round best-of-three before falling to Angelo State.
Each year the Wildcats host their annual tournament drawing a number of Midwest and Northern teams to come play in a warmer region during early February.
