Wildcats Place Fourth With Pair Under Par After First Round in Houston

HOUSTON — Abilene Christian men's golf's Rex Hargrove and Kade McDonough each scored under par in the opening round of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic on Monday. The Wildcats placed fourth at 4-under 284 after battling through a weather delay lasting over two hours at Westwood Golf Club.
ACU returns to action Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The Wildcats have six to 10 holes remaining in the second round before wrapping up with the third and final round. After the first round, ACU was just five strokes behind host Rice in first place.
Hargrove paced the Wildcats in a tie for 10th place at 3-under 69 following a blistering finish on the back nine. The Houston native carded five birdies at 5-under 31 and totaled six birdies for the entire round. Hargrove scored above par on just two holes after leading ACU with seven birdies at last week's Canadian Collegiate Invitational. It's the best round of the redshirt junior's collegiate career.
McDonough was right behind in a draw for 14th place at 2-under 70. He shot below par on six holes, featuring five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 No. 18. McDonough birdied three of his first four holes before scoring 4-under 32 after the turn.
Luis Buech, the Wildcats' top performer at their season-opening tournament, tied for 30th place at an even-par 72. He tallied six birdies, including five as part of a 3-under 33 front nine. Maximilian Björnström tied for 39th at 1-over 73 with five birdies. He delivered another strong finish at 2-under 34 on the back nine.
Jack Hollingsed, the final golfer in the lineup, and freshman Cooper Watson, competing as an individual, each tied for 54th at 3-over 75. They totaled four birdies.
