ABILENE - The ACU softball team can take a major step toward clinching a spot in the WAC Tournament when the Wildcats host Tarleton State on Friday and Saturday at Poly Wells Field.
ACU enters the series tied for 5th place in the conference with a 7-8 record. Tarleton State is 2nd at 12-6. The top eight teams qualify for the WAC Tournament with the top four advancing to the double elimination portion on May 7-10 in Riverside, California.
"I think it's going to be throwing punches back-and-forth," head coach Jo Koons said. "We're all sitting real tight in conference still, so it's about battling it out and getting our athletes to continue to buy-in even when it's hard."
The Wildcats are coming off losing two games at Baylor last weekend.
Elizabeth Schaefer hit her third home run in the last five games on Saturday. Before this stretch Schaefer had just one home run in her first 70 college games.
"My biggest message after the games at Baylor was we control how we want to finish this. We are closer than a lot of people thought we'd be. The fact we are still in the hunt should be enough motivation for them."
The Texans lead the Division I series against ACU 8-5.
Tarleton State and ACU split a doubleheader in Stephenville last year.
Lina Russo threw 6.2 IP with just one earned run over the two games.
Ella Beeman earned the win in the nightcap.
"The biggest goal is to come out and attack from the start," said Koons. "We finally need to be able to do it."
Friday is Youth League Day at Poly Wells Field, and Saturday serves as the program's Faith and Family Day. All kids 12 and under are invited to take part in an Easter egg hunt on the field after Saturday's game.
All three games will stream on
WAC International.
