ABILENE - Abilene Christian's Grégoire Hoyeau opened the spring season on a high note as he was named the WAC Men's Golfer of the Week, the conference announced on Thursday. It's the first weekly honor of the junior's career.
Hoyeau received the honor after guiding the Wildcats to a fourth-place finish amongst a 15-team field at the Vaqueros Intercollegiate this week in Cancún, Mexico. He rose 18 spots on Tuesday's final day of competition to finish in 12th place with a 3-over 219. Hoyeau notched the best score on an ACU squad with a trio of top-20 performances.
The Paris, France native improved his score each day at the par-72, 6,683-yard Iberostar Playa Paraíso Golf Club. Hoyeau fired a 4-over 76 on Sunday's first day of action, answering a triple bogey on the third hole with a trio of birdies on holes 5, 6 and 10. He finished the round in 32nd place as the Wildcats slid into third at the end of the first round.
Hoyeau logged a 2-over 74 on Monday with another trio of birdies in the second round, improving his stock to rise to 30th on the leaderboard. He saved his best performance for the tournament's final day with a 3-under 69 showing that helped ACU make the jump from seventh to fourth place as a team.
The Wildcats recorded Tuesday's best team performance with an even-par 288, three strokes ahead of eventual champion SMU. Hoyeau fired the top individual score that day, too, thanks to five birdies that skyrocketed him up the leaderboard.
ACU returns to action on Monday and Tuesday at the Bentwater Intercollegiate, hosted by Rice University at Bentwater Country Club in Montgomery, Texas.
