Cats Win to Clinch Three Seed

ABILENE – Abilene Christian claimed the WAC Tournament's No. 3 seed after a dramatic 4-3 win over Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Sunday.
 
Daniel Morozov clinched the win at No. 1 singles, handing Emilien Burnel his first Western Athletic Conference loss in three sets.
 
ACU won the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Ethan Scribner and Benjamin McDonald won for a 1-0 lead and Merse Deli and Jose Maria Rastrojo got the clincher.
 
Freshman Martin Delnido won quickly in straight sets at No. 6 singles but UTRGV took a 3-2 lead before freshman Dennis Dutine tied the match on Court 5.
 
Morozov got the victory in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
 
"Dani came through for us huge today, beating a guy that hasn't lost in conference yet at No. 1, and for Dani to step up and win the way he did and three sets and come through for the team was incredible," said ACU Head Coach Juan Nunez. "And then having our freshman with Martin and Dennis, once again coming through for us; it's incredible."
 
Seniors Rastrojo, Mihally Deli and Dario Kmet, along with assistant coach Jeff Guerrero were honored after the last home match of the season.
 
The Wildcats at 2-2 are the third seed in the WAC Tournament and play at 9 a.m. on Friday against the No. 2 seed, Grand Canyon.
 
"We wanted the three seed and we got it," Nunez said. Now it's survive and advance. We're hoping we can recover quickly. In a couple of days, we'll be heading down south and anything can happen once the tournament starts."
