ABILENE – Abilene Christian ended a five-game slide with a 4-0 win over Sam Houston State in the Teague Event Center on Saturday.
The Wildcats ended the Bearkats two-game winning streak with fast wins in Nos. 1 and 3 doubles and then taking the top three singles matches.
"Feels good to get the monkey off our back a little bit," said ACU Head Coach
Bryan Rainwater. "We've been building the past three or four matches, just really playing well and trying to get our feet underneath. They've done a great job. Last match, we had a lot of chances to win against Corpus and I knew that was a good team. So I knew coming in, if we played as a team, we'd have good results. Everybody fought hard."
Masha Vrsalovic and
Maria Cascos started things well with a win at first singles, 6-2, and
Andrea Guerrero and
Olivia Sears took No. 3 singles, 6-4.
Maryjoe Crisologo and
Libby Blair were up 5-3 when the match was suspended.
Vrsalovic then won quickly, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3 singles and Sears took a 6-2, 6-1 win at the top line.
Crisologo finished off the match with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at second singles. Guerrero was up a set at No. 5 singles.
The Wildcats now turn their attention to the Western Athletic Conference, traveling to Texas-Arlington on Friday for a 2 p.m. match.
