Cats Tie UTEP with Third Shutout

EL PASO – Abilene Christian picked up its third consecutive shutout to start the season but couldn't keep the win streak going, settling for a scoreless draw at Texas-El Paso on Thursday.

Lili Ross and Julia Herges got the combined shutout in goal with Herges getting the only two saves needed for the contest.

"A good team result on the road against a UTEP team that is going to be a top contender in their conference," said ACU Head Coach Stephen Salas. "Proud of the team with earning three shutouts in three games to stay undefeated. We played on the front foot most of the game and I'm excited with our trajectory. We've been focusing on building our defense throughout August and the effort has shown tonight. We are excited to come back home on Sunday for our home opener!"

ACU dominated the possession in the first half and battled the win for a more equal second half.

The Wildcats narrowly missed getting the only goal of the game when a Peyton Hill shot glanced off the crossbar and over the net in the 55th minute.

Both teams had fruitless possessions on their offensive ends in the game's final minute.

ACU had 10 shots in the game, led by Hill with three. Jordan Michie and Hannah Vetromile had two each while Hannah Martin, Jazzy Torres and Lox Neves launched one each. Hill, Michie, Martin, Vetromile and Neves each had one shot on goal.

The Wildcats finish off their three-game opening-season road trip at 2-0-1 with three shutouts. That streak includes wins at Lamar (1-0) and Texas Southern (3-0).

ACU plays its home opener at 11 a.m. on Sunday against Nicholls, which opens the season on Friday at Tarleton State.
