What has camp been like with so many terrific athletes at the position?
I think I have four or five guys that are battling right now for starting positions and it's hard on me but it's fun to see them competing and encouraging each other. At any given moment I'd be comfortable running any of those five out there in the first group or the second group.
It's always good to have competition and the talent to back it up.
What to the returning player bring to the unit?
It's always good to have returners and the foundation those guys have set since before I got here. They've already been through all of the changes and they have experienced ACU.
How about the newcomers?
They bring adequate depth. We've got some new guys that are talented but raw. A lot of them are coming from well-groomed programs and kudos to their coaches. They are adapting to the college level.
Who are some guys who are leading the team now?
Jed Castles,
Noah Caldwell, Chiddy (Chidebum Lebechi),
Rece Stafford – those guys are leaders and that's what we preach on. It's a player-led game. We have got to lead and we will go as far as you guys take us. They have to develop leaders behind them. The next leaders have to be shown how to lead.
What are you prioritizing right now in camp?
Being physical and approaching every day like a first date. As far as those dates go, every single day is my only shot and that's all I have. Emphasizing trusting the process and leaning on each other and one day at a time.
What do you want to see from this group?
I want to see them accomplish becoming a brotherhood and what it's like to be a successful unit.
What are the expectations for the season?
We don't have expectations. We want to be the best. That's not an expectation. That's a requirement.
